The Importance of the Scientific Story

Abstract

Throughout history, those who tell the best stories are able to manifest the most change. This is as true for scientists as it is for politicians and actors. From Darwin to Watson to Kauffman, story tellers capture the imagination, elicit controversy and drive the desire for an understanding of our natural world.

We will briefly discuss the role of story-telling in historical and modern research science. We will expand the discussion to include the importance of communication in other scientific careers such as science policy and science writing. Finally, we will be available for questions about our experiences in our (non-research) scientific careers.
