Illinois Institute of Technology

2004 Faculty Handbook

At its 28 April 2004 meeting, the Faculty of Illinois Institute of Technology passed a revision of its faculty handbook. The vote was taken in two parts. The vote on the Faculty Constitution, i.e. the main body of the handbook and Appendix A, was tallied separately from the vote on the Faculty Bylaws, i.e. Appendices B through P. Both parts passed at that meeting in the forms depicted on this webpage; the Constitution passed without revision, whereas some changes were made in Appendices B and C at the meeting. The new handbook will become the operational faculty handbook if it is approved by the IIT Board of Trustees at its meeting on 18 May 2004.

Passage of the revised handbook brought to near-completion a process that began eighteen months earlier. At its October 10, 2002 meeting, the University Faculty Council established the ad-hoc Faculty Handbook Revision Committee to draft revisions to the Faculty Handbook to make it consistent with a single-campus university with a provost instead of campus vice-presidents. The committee membership is Howard Eglit, Ellen Mitchell, Mary Anne Smith, and Geoff Williamson. The committee met from October 2002 through fall 2003 as it prepared a draft revision of the handbook for consideration. In addition to making the Faculty Handbook consistent with a single-campus university, the committee has made some clarifications and informational updates. The committee submitted its draft revision to the University Faculty Council (UniFC) in late 2003, and further revisions were made to the documents seen here, based on votes taken at UniFC meetings. Finally, there were revisions made by the University faculty at the April 2004 meeting. All changes (deletions and additions) are clearly marked in the draft revised documents.

The revised the Faculty Handbook is now available here. Because the Constitution (main body and appendix A) passed in April without revision, it is presented here in "clean" (continuous-text) form, without editing marks. Appendices B and C are presented in "marked-up" form, wherein the changes made at the 28 April meeting are highlighted. Appendices D through P are presented in clean form.

For reference, the current Faculty Handbook is on the IIT web site at http://www.iit.edu/staff/faculty_handbook.
